Drug-fuelled fantasies are not often seen in listings of classical concerts, but that’s the semi-autographical basis for Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which features a hallucinatory march, a satanic dance, and passion aplenty. The symphony is preceded by Beethoven’s sublimely beautiful Piano Concerto in which bold muscular melodies combine with music of unbelievable, fragile beauty.
